Refractive surgery adjusts the focusing system of the eye (the cornea and/or lens) to create clearer vision. Refractive Surgery to the cornea includes LASIK, PRK, Intralase and Astigmatic Keratotomy while lens surgery includes the ICL and Clear Lens Exchange. LASIK is the most modern type of laser eye surgery that involves delicately creating a flap of tissue on the cornea and then reshaping the underlying cornea to change the focusing power of the eye. Astigmatic Keratotomy involves delicately cutting the peripheral cornea with a special micrometer diamond knife and is used to create a more even spherical shape on the cornea.
ICL surgery involves adding an implantable contact lens to the eyes natural focusing system and has much the same effect as the traditional contact lens except that it is placed inside the eye rather than on the surface of the eye.
Clear Lens Exchange involves replacing the natural lens of the eye with an artificial lens. It is an operation almost exactly the same as modern cataract microsurgery but is done simply to decrease dependence on glasses and not because the natural lens has become cloudy. A multifocal lens can be implanted to further reduce dependence on glasses.
